How to Light and Burn Monastic Incense at Home
- Prepare Your Censer: Line the bowl of your censer with a small piece of aluminum foil to protect it from heat, and allow a thin bed of natural ash to build up over time. An ash layer acts as a natural heat insulator.
- Light the Charcoal: Using tongs, hold an outer edge of a quick-lighting charcoal disc over a flame until it glows red. Place the charcoal directly onto the ash bed in your censer and wait 1–2 minutes until it becomes covered with a thin grey ash coating.
- Place the Incense: Gently place 1 to 3 pieces of incense from your sampler onto the glowing coal. Lightly press each piece into the coal for a few seconds so it adheres securely and begins to vaporize smoothly.
Safety Reminder: Always practice fire safety. Keep burning censers on heat-resistant surfaces and out of reach of children or drafty areas. Never leave burning charcoal unattended.
