A Personal Bouquet from the Incense Maker
Monk Symeon knows the exact character of every batch crafted in our workshop—the nuance of every aromatic oil, the balance of every ribbon, and the burn quality of every hand-cut grain. By choosing this curated assortment, you are inviting him to hand-select a harmonious mix of our finest incense varieties for your home censer or church parish.
Whether his selection includes a rare, delicate floral blend, a beloved traditional Athonite classic, or a freshly cured batch that turned out exceptionally well, every package is assembled with joy and a blessing to elevate your daily prayer life.
The Monastery Purity Guarantee: What Sets Our Incense Apart
Sadly, much of the commercial incense sold online today is mass-produced in industrial facilities using cheap, irritating substitutes designed to cut manufacturing costs. Many commercial makers cut corners with “zombie incense” ingredients that pollute your home and choke your lungs:
- No Bark or Wood Scrapings: Low-grade incense is often adulterated with floor sweepings, tree bark, and woody debris. When placed on hot charcoal, these wood particles burn and scorch, producing an acrid, campfire-like smoke that stings the eyes and chokes out delicate fragrances.
- No Petrochemical Solvents or DPG: Some industrial producers heavily dilute their aromatic oils with cheap chemical extenders like Dipropylene Glycol (DPG). When heated, these synthetic solvents sputter like cheap frying oil, releasing harsh, throat-irritating aldehyde byproducts into your room.
- No Industrial Talc Powder: Many commercial factories coat their incense in cheap talcum powder to stop their cutting machines from gunking up. Talc acts as a harsh mineral lubricant that smothers essential oils, distorts fragrance, and introduces risks of lung irritation.
Every grain in your Curated Orthodox Incense Selection strictly adheres to our 3-ingredient purity standard:
- First-Grade Ethiopian Frankincense: We use only pristine, hand-sorted Boswellia papyrifera tears that melt cleanly on hot charcoal, releasing a sweet, majestic, fruit-and-cedar aroma without soot.
- Undiluted Swiss Aromatic Essences: Imported from master distillers in Switzerland—the world standard for molecular purity. We add zero aftermarket diluents.
- Pure Magnesium Carbonate Powder: The historical, traditional Greek monastic mineral coating (ανθρακική μαγνησία). An odorless mineral that acts like a microscopic sponge, locking essential oils inside the incense pieces while leaving behind only a harmless, scentless white ash when burned.
How Our Monastic Incense Is Handcrafted
True monastic incense is not a surface-coated pebble; it is a meticulously hand-kneaded blend. The physical labor of creating every batch in our Boeotia workshop is performed in a spirit of silent prayer:
First, our premium Ethiopian frankincense tears are finely crushed into a clean powder. Concentrated Swiss essences are poured directly into the powder, and the mixture is vigorously hand-kneaded until it binds into a thick, uniform incense dough. This locks the fragrance deep into the molecular structure of the blend so it burns consistently from start to finish.
Next, the dough is rolled into smooth, even ribbons and coated with pure magnesia powder. After resting in curing trays to allow the aromas to stabilize, the monks take scissors and meticulously hand-cut the cured ribbons into individual pieces—traditionally referred to as “tears” or “grains.”
How to Enjoy Your Selection at Home
Burning Orthodox incense at home is a simple, pious tradition meant to foster an atmosphere of peace and attentive prayer. When your curated package arrives:
- Line your censer bed with a small layer of aluminum foil and a resting bed of ash to soften the charcoal’s heat.
- Light your incense charcoal until a glowing ember appears along one edge.
- Place 1 to 3 grains of incense directly onto the charcoal, pressing them down lightly for a few seconds so they adhere firmly to the coal.
- Allow the pure, soot-free aroma to fill your icon corner, home, or church space as you pray.
