Description

When you choose to light a vigil lamp at the Sacred Monastery of St. John of the Ladder, you participate directly in an ancient Orthodox act of piety, faith, and quiet intercession. For just €2,49, our brotherhood provides and tends the pure olive oil needed to keep a sacred lamp burning before the holy icons for a full day.

Angels in the Fields: The Legacy of the Olive Harvest

In generations past across the historic regions of Attica and Boeotia, the relationship between rural Orthodox families and local monasteries was deeply tied to the land. The annual olive harvest traditionally began immediately following the feast of St. Demetrios and the Holy Martyr Nestor.

Pious villagers and monastics worked in the groves. If you were blessed to walk through the fields during those days, you could hear what sounded like the voices of angels echoing through the trees—nuns and monks perched high in the olive branches, chanting the Akathist Hymn (Salutations to the Mother of God) by heart as they harvested every olive by hand.

From the first cold-pressing of those harvests, faithful families reserved a generous portion of pure olive oil to bring to their parish churches and nearby monasteries. It was offered as a humble gift to God to keep the vigil lamps (καντήλια) perpetually lit before the iconostasis.

The Reality Today: Helping Us Tend the Flame

Today, times have changed. Modern life has separated many families from their ancestral olive groves, and this beautiful custom of bringing oil to the monastery has nearly vanished. As a result, the financial and physical responsibility of sourcing olive oil to fuel the temple lamps falls almost entirely upon our small brotherhood.

Our monastery receives no external state grants or institutional subsidies; we support our daily life and ministry through our hands and the almsgiving of the faithful. By offering €2,49 to light a vigil lamp for a day, you relieve our brotherhood of this expense and ensure that the tradition of offering oil continues.
